poor man's gard{en}

i am so ready for fall weather.
especially since
painting pieces for disregard{en}
means being outside.
i melt. literally.

here is a fun new addition
to our
poor man's gard{en}

mr. amazing (my husband, jonathan)
 built these crates
out of reclaimed, 100-year-old
baseboards. then he connected them
and made them a bookcase.
and surprised me with it.
i love him.
it makes our poor man's gard{en}: living room
all that more unique and special.

i hope you had a great tuesday
friends.

see you for lost&found
on thursday!

xoxo

poor man's gard{en}

well, after the perfect
weekend away with friends,
i am now back to working.
and i mean working.
painting, sanding, sealing,
waxing, stripping,
wallpaper-ing(is that a word?),
gluing, cutting and finding.
maybe not in that order
but something like it.

in the midst of working
on pieces for disregard{en},
mr amazing and i have
found some time to
rearrange our little home.

so i thought i would share some photos
of our study.
we added a new desk and realized
we needed to change things up a bit...
of course, as to stick within
the poor man's gard{en} theme,
everything in this room was either
found at a thrift store, flea market,
craigslist, or given to us. minus some books.
{ps: yes, we have that many books}

doesn't it make you want to
curl up in a blanket and
read the entire day?
i wish.
although i am beginning to read
mrs. dalloway.
maybe i'll find my way over to that
comfy leather chair tonight...

i hope you had a lovely
tuesday.
i did. it was absolutely
gorgeous and perfect weather to work
on my pieces.

i cannot wait to show you.
stay tuned for
thursday's
'lost&found'

poor man's gard{en}

i am so proud of us.
we finished the kitchen at my dad's.
and, jonathan, i mean mr. amazing, finished
painting my dad's living room
(minus the trim)
and we finished the next stage of our
guest room.
phew.

you might want to hire us as your
professional
painters/designers/decorators/kitchen organizers
because we finished my dad's kitchen and living room
(well, the first stage)
under 20 hours.
yes, i know.
feel free to contact me with your
next project (smile).

here are some photos of my dad's
kitchen and living room.
i actually took these before we finished
the details. i had to get in a few
photos before the lighting made it impossible...

this is what it looked like before
our amazing painting skills

and this is what it looked like
after the twenty hours

remember, we haven't stained the floors
or replaced old appliances yet.
{and i promise i will take a photo
with a view of the entire kitchen next time}
i know the tile is hideous. but i am going to
apply my savvy decor skills and
bring the burnt orange to other places.
the color scheme of the kitchen/living room area
will be greens/blues/burnt orange/neutrals.
i think.

oh, and here is the living room
before photo

look at those high ceilings.
and after mr. amazing applied his painting skills

so much better.
i mean, we still have to stain floors, window sills,
add curtains, furniture & accents...
and that is just the living room. phew!
baby steps.

i am not sure when we are working on the next stage
but i will definitely keep you posted.

i think we'll try and work on our house
over the next few months...
like landscaping and painting the outside.
i know. we are crazy. but we love it.

here are a few photos of our new guestroom.
keep in mind the main furniture pieces
(the bed, dresser, desk, & some accents)
were all given to us.
yes. free.

thank you to phil & debbi for
the amazing dresser, cindee for the bed frame,
lindsay for the metal ceiling tile,
and our fellow craigslist free-er for our
desk.
i wanted to be a guest in our house yesterday.
this isn't the final stage but that should be
assumed as we always have new projects up our sleeves.

and, speaking of projects, i have been
working away on some new furniture pieces!
so stay tuned for 'lost&found' thursday.

there might even be more
than one project featured!?!?

hope you enjoy your tuesday
my loving and supportive friends.

lost & found

today's feature
isn't really a new
project.
but, i promised
you i would show you
beautiful mabel
(& her friend)
in her new home...

so here she is

she sits on my side of the bed

her friend sits on mr. amazing's side
of the bed

and there they are. perfectly
cozy against our wall of windows & drapes

our bedroom is a converted patio. yes,
it is basically like camping. we can see
our breath during the winter. but just think,
one day we can look back and say 'remember when...'
and laugh. we're newlyweds. you can't have your dream
home right away...

hope you are enjoying your thursday
dear friends.

oh, and i forgot to mention.
i'm running
(alongside mr. amazing and
our beautiful cousin, tiffany)
a HALF marathon.
that is 13.1 miles. but i have until
september to train.
so guess what i'm doing today?
running/walking/buying running shoes.

here's to a new year full of
health, balance, creativity, inspiration
and, of course, love.

poor man's gard[en]

the lovely rain
has made it nearly impossible
to enjoy our garden.
except for picking some fresh
{& very wet}
herbs to cook with...

but i love the rain.
and, am going to enjoy
working on things inside our home
while the pouring continues.

here is one photo and a
 quick glimpse
into our newly decorated guest-room
& what it is beginning to look like...

i told you. a quick glimpse.
there is a theme and feel
we are going for. can you tell?

once the holidays are over
we will find time to finish this
room up and show you! and i cannot wait!

on another note,
i cannot believe it is almost christmas.
this year went by quickly!
this week's blogs might be a little
sparse as i am working crazy
holiday hours and finishing up
christmas gifts.
but i am very much
looking forward to sharing creativity
with you after the holidays.

i hope you are enjoying your
lovely december tuesday.
stay warm & dry!
{wherever you are}

                            .jessnicole.

16 December, 2010

two in one...

because i did not
have time to post on tuesday
for 'poor man's gard{en}'
i thought i would include them in
my post today...

so here is this week's
poor man's gard{en}: christmas decor

stage two
{and final stage. i think...}

our mantle.

our christmas books.
out to read.

{and my trees. finally finished.
the ones that took forever.}

i love christmas.
and i love decorating for christmas.
and i love cooking for christmas.
and making gifts.
it's perfect.
i hope you are all enjoying preparing
for the wonderful holidays.

and here is today's
'lost & found'

the lovely & simple,
mabel

when she was lost

and now that she is found

a really simple clean up.
she just needed some sanding
and staining.

thank you again cindee for
the lovely piece.

mabel is going to fit so nicely
in our bedroom.

and this is the other side
table i worked on.
she is going to be
another perfect addition
to our bedroom.

a lost photo

and a found photo

another simple fix.

thank you debbi & phil
for the wonderful addition.
we love it.
i'll try and post some photos
once the two new pieces
are in their new home.
next to our bed.

have a lovely evening.
see you tomorrow friends.

                   .jessnicole.

07 December, 2010

poor man's gard[en]

well, if you ever read
my blog, even the 'every-once-in-a-while' read,
you have probably noticed my extreme
lack of blogging.

it has been a crazy month.
actually, make that a crazy few months.
now that i'm working a 'real' job
it has made it really difficult to actually
find time for the things i enjoy doing...
but no excuses. i am going to be much more disciplined.
even if i am working a full forty hour
work week this week. eek! {i rhymed}
although, i might ask for some grace every now and then.
and, there are going to be some exciting changes
with disregard{en} within the next few weeks
 so stay tuned!

but to recap you on the last few weeks,
i enjoyed the most delicious thanksgiving meal
with beautiful family
{all with williams-sonoma or family recipes}, worked mucho,
got sick, watched & became addicted
to 'friday night lights',
worked on some fun pieces for friends,
cooked, baked, got a little
discouraged & overwhelmed with life
{you know. a few of those days. but i
have a better perspective now}, and got our christmas tree!
so not that this recap
makes up for the lost time,
but i hope it helps a little...

and, i know this will help.
our first stage to decorating for christmas.
i plan on finishing
{with the help of mr. amazing, of course}
this upcoming weekend.

here are some photos to show you
what we have been doing
in the poor man's gard{en}: indoors.

our tree!!!
it smells gloriously amazing.

{yes, mr. amazing has already
purchased & wrapped some gifts. he
continues to live up to his name}

and, my advent calendar!
{i made this with my dear
friend julie. ours are perfectly unique
with a hint of the same materials. you
should see hers.
it is gorgeously detailed...}

our manger scene.
all you need
is jesus and a sheep.

and, a few things completed during stage one

free wood cuttings
{i got them when we got our tree.
they are perfect. i cannot
wait to decorate with all of them}

and, last but not least
{better not be since it
is taking forever}
my styrofoam christmas
trees. still in process, of course.

i love christmas.

i work a ridiculous amount of hours this week,
but i am hoping to have a
'lost & found' and a 'free{day}'
this week.
see you then sweet friends!
