Hi Jessica, I saw that you re stained Cole (and he looks great) and I thought you might be able to give me some advice. I have an antique table of my grandmothers that I would like to sand and re-stain to get rid of years of stains and water marks. I've never taken on a project like this and am afraid of doing it incorrectly. What was your process with Cole? And do you have any advice? Thanks!
Hillary, how did I miss this message?!?!?!?!
I am so sorry friend :O(
Do you have a photo of the piece? It might be easiest to give you advice on it if I could see it....
If not, the best thing to do is to sand with FINE grain sandpaper (so you can go slowly & not hurt the wood). Sand until you get past the stains/marks/etc. Make sure you go in the direction of the wood (all wood will show it's direction by the lines. it's pretty obvious if the piece is cleaned up). Just remember, if it is a true antique and you don't want it to lose it's monetary value, it might be best to have a professional do it. BUT, if it's more sentimental than anything, just go slowly :O) Once you sand, clean the wood, & then stain. You might have to do a few coats of stain. At the end make sure you seal it with a polyeurothane (I prefer satin finish) or a wax. Or a combination of the two. Feel free to email me at disregardener@gmail.com if you have any more questions.....or want to send me a photo :O)
